PM Petteri Orpo (NCP) met with Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Swedish premier Ulf Kristersson in Brussels on Thursday ahead of a European Council meeting.
The trio shared notes on how investigations into damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline and underwater telecoms cables were progressing.
Kallas reported on social media platform X that the premiers also discussed improving the security of critical Baltic Sea infrastructure.
News agency AFP on Thursday meanwhile reported Orpo saying Helsinki was working with Beijing to find out more about a Chinese ship likely linked to damage of the undersea gas pipeline.
Finnish authorities have recovered an anchor, believed to be from a Hong Kong-flagged Chinese freighter, that appears to have caused the damage earlier this month. Finnish investigators revealed earlier this week that they had recovered a ship’s anchor from the seabed near where the pipeline was damaged, as investigators focus on the movements and activities of the ship, which is owned by a Chinese firm.
“We are cooperating with China to find out the role of the Chinese ship which was in this area,” AFP cited Orpo as telling journalists in Brussels.
Helsinki released photographs of underwater tracks, believed to have been produced by a six-tonne anchor being dragged across the seabed and then hitting the Balticconnector pipeline.
Finnish investigators have declined to speculate if the damage was intentional.
