The picking season for edible wild mushrooms has started in many places across Finland, the University of Jyväskylä told Finnish News Agency STT.
Fruiting fungi, such as chanterelles, yellow swamp brittlegills and gypsy mushrooms, are already abundant in regions such as Central Finland.
On the other hand, the mushroom harvest is still poor on the south coast of the country, according to the Finnish Museum of Natural History. Some areas of Finland will see mushroom harvests later in the summer.
Mushrooms can be picked almost anywhere in Finland thanks to Everyone’s Rights, which allow access to nature regardless of property ownership. However, it is important to exercise caution and only pick identifiable and edible mushrooms.
It is very difficult to predict the exact harvest of the different mushroom species. Rainfall, heat and, in some cases, the health of trees all influence the mushroom picking crop season by season.
Picking mushrooms is a favourite late summer and autumn outdoor activity in Finland, providing both healthy recreation and free food.
