At least one Finnish citizen has been evacuated along with other EU citizens from the West African country of Niger after the military staged a coup.
A Finnish expert had been working in Niger as part of the EU’s Civilian Crisis Management operation in the country. The Crisis Management Centre under the Finnish Ministry of the Interior told Yle that the individual has been evacuated by the EU mission.
Soldiers seized power in Niger from the elected president last week. EU countries have now begun evacuating their citizens from Niger.
Finland has very little contact with Niger. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs told Yle that there is no precise information on the number of Finnish citizens permanently residing in Niger.
Finland does not have an embassy in Niger and the closest Finnish embassy is in neighbouring Nigeria.
A few Finnish citizens had made a travel declaration to Niger, but according to the Foreign Ministry, none of them are currently in Niger.
