Protests are expected to continue on Friday.
Demonstrators broke into the compound housing three Nordic embassies on Thursday, forcing the Finnish embassy to evacuate staff.
The protesters were targeting the Swedish diplomatic mission in the city, after a backlash over Swedish police decision to allow a Quran to be publicly burnt near a mosque in Stockholm.
The Deputy Head of Mission in Baghdad Anna Malinen told Yle that the situation escalated quickly, but the protest remained in the yard and did not get inside the building.
Larger protests are expected on Friday, with the peak expected after Friday prayers. The Swedish ambassador had been called in by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry for discussions over the Quran burning.
Turkey’s President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan also criticised the decision to allow the Quran burning, which comes as Sweden waits for Turkish approval of its bid for Nato membership.
“We will eventually teach the arrogant Westerners that insulting Muslims is not freedom of thought,” said Erdogan.
Sweden had hoped to have its Nato bid approved by the time of a Nato summit in July.
